After more than three years of work, we have finally succeeded in having tiger nut oil officially recognized as a Novel Food by the European Commission. This approval allows its commercialization throughout the European Union for human consumption, marking a milestone both for the company and for the agri-food sector.
The project, led entirely by Tigernuts, required an intensive effort to gather scientific studies, conduct quality controls, and collaborate with international experts. The resolution confirms that tiger nut oil meets all the safety and quality requirements established by EU legislation.
This recognition not only validates the product but also opens up new opportunities in the development of healthy, functional, and sustainable foods. Its high content of oleic acid, which helps regulate cholesterol and triglycerides, along with its richness in vitamin E with antioxidant properties, makes this oil a very healthy option for culinary use. It has a very balanced nutritional profile, quite similar to that of olive oil, to which many benefits are attributed — equally applicable to tiger nut oil.
Good news: Tigernuts oil is now available for sale! We invite you to contact us for further information or samples.
WHAT IS NOVEL FOOD?
Novel Food refers to foods that were new or rarely consumed before 1997 in the EU, such as plants, insects, or modified ingredients. Its regulation ensures that they are safe and properly labelled before being sold. The legislation was first introduced in 1997 and updated in 2015, establishing an authorization process so that these foods can reach the market without health risks.
