With the full implementation of Regulation (EU) 848/2018, the European organic sector is entering a decisive phase that prioritises control, harmonisation and transparency. This is good news for Tigernuts and its customers. In this context, our new harvest of organic tiger nuts is the first to be fully certified under this new regulation, representing a significant step forward for industry players.
A more demanding and uniform regulatory framework
Until the end of 2024, two regulations coexisted: 834/2007 and 848/2018. From now on, the latter becomes the only legal reference, with key implications for the entire agri-food chain.
Among the main changes, the strengthening of the control and certification system stands out: more frequent audits, unannounced checks and a more uniform model between Member States. In addition, certification by producer groups is introduced, which is particularly relevant in developing countries.
With regard to imports, the change from the principle of ‘equivalence’ to that of ‘compliance’ means that imported organic products must meet exactly the same requirements as those produced in the EU. This improves traceability and reduces regulatory inequalities.
A stable and diversified supply of organic tiger nuts
Organic tiger nuts not only comply with the new standards, but also allow Tigernuts to offer supply guarantees: more than 500 tonnes already secured for 2025, covering customer needs until early 2026.
In addition, Tigernuts has strengthened its geographical diversification strategy to mitigate risks and expand its range of varieties, thus adapting to more specific market demands.
Towards more coherent organic farming
Another key point of Regulation 848/2018 is the promotion of the exclusive use of organic seeds, with a mandatory database and the aim of achieving 100% organic reproductive material by 2036.
For all our customers in the agri-food sector, the new organic tiger nut from Tigernuts represents a reliable, certified raw material that is aligned with the highest organic production standards in Europe. This new step ensures continuous product quality, already corroborated by Tigernuts’ exhaustive controls. In short, we are gradually fulfilling our goals, thanks in part to the regulations.
